Review: Stillness by Sahara Beck

Stillness”, released March 4th, finds Australian singer Sahara Beck in the throes of her own busy mind. Reeling through an panic-ridden spiral, “Stillness” is an exquisitely produced journey that, while anxious, exudes a powerful and fearless showing of her own styling of indie pop.

As a fierce pulse of what seems to be a heartbeat created by instruments, “Stillness” promptly ebbs and flows as Beck’s vocals croon about the traffic of the street, her mind, and her soul. The chorus is soft and floaty as Sahara finds moments of calm and stillness before the music floor drops out from under her, sending her flying into fast verse and running through her stressors with a frenzy of uncertainty. The track feels like a sonic blend of 90’s grunge and R&B take on Fleetwood Mac, but all with a light air of pop running concurrently throughout, giving “Stillness” both a distinct spike of individuality and also the worn comfort of a common chord.

Beck also shines through her lyrical vulnerability within “Stillness”. In her post announcing the single, Sahara said “I have been really struggling to feel comfortable and positive about celebrating the release of [the] song while we are surrounded by so much tragedy and chaos. Sometimes it feels so insignificant. But ART can have such an uplifting impact on us all. I know I’m not alone – So many people deal with Panic Attacks and Anxiety every day. Especially during significant events like those happening around the world right now. So my hope is that this song will make you feel a little less alone, and provide some hope and comfort to you, if you need it.”

Without question, Sahara Beck is hitting her stride with “Stillness”, which only solidifies her oncoming power as she has continued to bring in songwriting awards and accolades in both Australia and abroad.
