Review: blank slate by Headrush

Singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer Jack Warren, known for his solo project named Headrush, just dropped his latest indie pop anthem titled “blank slate”. The song begins with a fade in of strong electric guitar before Warren’s vocals floor in with a full backing track of percussive elements and guitar riffs. With a strong mix of rack, alternative, indie, and pop influence, Warren has beautifully produced this track that offers a diverse range of sound and pacing to keep the song fresh and bright.

The lyrics of “blank slate” find Headrush getting himself out of the state of being trapped in a half asleep and delirious state. He is using sleep as an expressive metaphor for the feeling of being trapped, with the subsequent waking up being freedom. As the track drives forward, Warren is directly singing for others like him to follow along in the journey to freeing yourself from the routines that hold you back. Underneath its own flashy and colorful production, “blank slate” is a strong and vulnerable look into Warren's mind as he moves past the restraints keeping him from his dreams.

Warren described this single as “feeling like throwing your cap in the air at graduation”, and Tongue Tied Magazine is certainly inclined to agree. Headrush’s curation of “blank slate” is perfectly timed for listening at full volume while driving with your windows down in the summertime heat.

You can stream “blank slate” on Spotify or Apple Music now, and be sure to follow Headrush on Instagram and Twitter!
