With a juxtaposing upbeat track and a distinctly glossy indie sheen, smythy’s latest track “gets me down” ponders loneliness and the need to ask for help from one’s own mind.

The introspective lyrics of the track are the true star of the show here, offering an intimate look into smythy as he drowns in his mind before recognizing his need for others and pleading to the listener to save him through the chorus. When discussing the track, smythy said, “The song was written as a means to try and make sense of the sadness we all face from time to time. The writer is looking to be saved from himself as he is his own worst enemy and can’t find solutions internally so he looks outwards for help. He longs to be distracted from the thoughts that frequently ‘get him down’.”

In truth, “gets me down” is simultaneously a summer bop and an anthem of angst produced expertly for the heat of June. Wispy synths lure the listener in before the punch of drums swallows everything but smythy’s pleading thoughts. Trying to save himself through the riff of the guitar, smythy grasps at freedom from the overpowering sadness that threatens to consume him. Reminiscent of inspirations such as Dayglow and Tame Impala but distinctly his own, smithy’s production hammers home his strong lyricism to create a sonic whirlpool of emotions.
