Review: Bottle It Up by Brooke Surrett

Struggling with how to express her emotions, Brooke Surrett’s stunning debut single “Bottle It Up” seeks to encapsulate the confusion of miscommunication and hiding thoughts with blissful indie-folk reverie.

While Brooke’s shimmering vocals hold a lofty and seemingly happy tone, there is a much deeper meaning held within Surrett’s passionate lyricism. The title directly refers to bottling up emotions and pushing away the situations that she cannot process through, and lyrics such as “Maybe I’ll let go, maybe I’ll explode” ring true to the state of being so full of emotions but not being able to let go. Surrett finds expression of self within her lack of ability to express emotions, curating an entirely too relatable track of the pitfalls of strained connections.

Originally created as an assignment for a songwriting class at Belmont University, the instrumentation of “Bottle It Up” is simple in its curation to allow Surrett’s harmonic lyricism to shine over smooth electric guitar and easy drums. The class assignment became a real song in local circles as her celebratory lilt over heartbreaking lyrics resonated with the songwriting community around her in Tennessee.

Sounding to come straight out of a coming of age movie soundtrack, “Bottle It Up” is the perfect song for a late night drive with the windows down and wind blowing through your hair. With such a stunning debut, Brooke Surrett needs to be on your radar as an emerging standout in music.
